Coming soon is Zion Opera Workshop's production of the Broadway show Guys and Dolls. ZOW will present Guys and Dolls on March 1, 2, and 3.

In the bleak days of Winter it is nice to have a warm and inviting Broadway show right here in Carbon County.

Coming soon is Zion Opera Workshop's production of the Broadway hit Guys and Dolls, to be presented on March 1, 2, and 3.

This comedic crowd pleaser will keep the audience on the edge of its seats with fantastic songs accompanied by a live orchestra. It will feel like you are watching it in New York City.

Written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, Guys and Dolls takes place in New York City in the early 1900s. Crap shooter Nathan Detroit (Mike Muffley) needs to run the biggest game in town to raise money to buy a building to continue hosting his illegal games.

Nathan also bets gambler Sky Masterson (Brent Harris) that he will not be able to get Save-A-Soul Missionary Sister Sarah Brown (Jessica Schafer) to go on a trip to Cuba with him. While Sky works on persuading Sarah, Nathan tries to avoid marriage with Adelaide (Becky Herd), the lead showgirl of the Hot Box Nightclub.

Ziion Opera Workshop is a community theatre that performs Broadway shows each Spring. The group was established in 1970 by Paul R. Smith. Performers throughout Carbon County come together to put on a spectacular show.

Volunteers help to make Zion Opera Workshop flourish each year. Stage crew, costume designers, orchestra members and many more help realize the final production of our musical each year. At the helm are music director Brad Cressley of Zion U.C.C., owner of Carbon County Music and More, who has been with ZOW for 29 years; stage director Dave Zimmerman, a ZOW veteran of 28 years, and choreographer Debbie Strausberger, owner of TNT Studio of Dance, who is new to ZOW. This hardworking team of directors can be counted on to produce a fun-filled musical.

"Coming off a successful near sell-out of Music Man last year, I felt it was important to continue the momentum with a crowd-pleasing, well known musical," said Cressley. "Guys and Dolls happens to be one of my favorites! ZOW has only ever done this show once before, and I felt it was once again time."

All active members love the opportunity ZOW gives them to get involved in our community. Brent Harris, who has been with ZOW for eight years, says "I joined ZOW because I feel it is a group that is very unique in our community. I think it provides a great opportunity for our younger cast members to experience the extremely rewarding process of preparing and performing a show."

Alissa Muffley (playing a Hot Box Girl), who has been with ZOW for five years, said "My husband and his family have been involved for years. When we started dating I was pressured to participate, and since then it's been a bug that I can't shake. It's very contagious."

Jim Blakeslee (playing a mission band member), who has been with ZOW for sixteen years, comments, "I continue to participate in ZOW because it is a community organization which provides an opportunity to meet new people. ZOW provided this for me when I was new in the community."

Choreographer Debbie Strausberger, in her first year with ZOW, says "I always loved coming to each year's production to see my peers up on stage. To this day, I still see my peers performing and also get to see my dance students take part in the wonderful opportunity ZOW has to offer. There is so much talent here in our little community."

Nathan Detroit (Mike Muffley) catches his doll, Adelaide (Becky Herd) for a quick shot.

Nicely-Nicely Johnson (Dave Zimmerman), Nathan Detroit (Mike Muffley), and Benny Southwest (Bryan Buffington) show off their moves after learning some choreography.

Martha Cox (playing a NYC citizen and tour guide) said, "I love being with the ZOW family, and having the chance to sing with so many talented people. I love watching the play take shape with music, choreography, and scenery. The product from start to finish is just amazing."

From Hot Box dancers and guileful gamblers to Sister Sarah and her Mission band, Guys and Dolls is a memorable experience for all audience members.
